Periodontal disease
Periodontitis is a inflammatory disease that affects the bone and the gums, that are the tissues which surround the teeth. Periodontal disease involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth.
It is currently the leading cause of dental mobility and loss.
It manifests in approximately 80% of the population of average adult age (>35 years old).
To understand the evolution of periodontal disease through its phases such as initial periodontitis, pasing through moderate periodontitis, and through to advanced periodontitis with the consequent loss of the tooth, you must be aware of how untreated gingivitis can generate periodontitis.
Periodontists barcelona
The periodontists at the Propdental dental clinics Barcelona will explain to you how to treat the gums and prevent periodontal disease.
Find out what the periodontists at the Barcelona dental clinics recommend for periodontal disease treatment also known as phyorrhoea.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is characterised by the inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth (if treated by the dentist it is totally reversible as there is no destruction of tissue).
Periodontitis
Periodontitis or "pyorrhoea" is normally caused by a prior gingivitis and consists of the destruction of the gums and the bone tissue surrounding the tooth.
How do I know if I have "pyorrhoea"
Spontaneous bleeding of the gums or when brushing the teeth?
Swollen, red or painful gums?
Sensitivity of the teeth or receding gums?
Mobility of one or more tooth/teeth?
Bad breath?
Purulent liquid between the teeth and gums?
Gums separated from the teeth?
Even if you present none of these signs you may still have periodontal disease (gingivitis or periodontitis).
In the majority of cases no pain is experienced and periodontitis - "pyorrhoea" - frequently passes unnoticed.
This is why it is important to request an appointment for the periodontal evaluation of your gums at our Barcelona dental clinics to stop periodontitis in its initial phases.
Price of periodontal disease treatment
At Propdental dental clinics Barcelona, periodontal disease treatment consists of
Periodontal probing, provides a diagnosis of the degree of affectation and bone destruction. Price 49 euros.
Dental cleaning (scale and polish) of the mouth and elimination of the plaque located above gum level.
Curettage and radicular scaling by quadrants. (elimination of the plaque located below the gum) Price 76 euros/quadrant.
Periodontal maintenance every 6 months.
(personalised individual periodic control and monitoring to evaluate the results and maintain periodontal health) price 79 euros.
The progression of periodontal disease (gum disease) can be halted, with recovery from the process better the earlier it has been detected.
Periodontal disease treatment
The periodontal disease treatmentalso known as pyhorrea consists in eliminating the bacteria which cause the disease and create the conditions not only to obstruct its reappearance but also to maintain the health of the gums in the future.
At our dental clinics once we have carried out a diagnostic periodontal probe the gum treatment is planned and normally consists of the curettage, scraping and smoothing of the periodontal sacs.
In some more advanced cases the gum treatment requires periodontal surgery.
Periodontal probe
The periodontal probe enables the dentist to diagnose the degree to which the gums have been affected (gingivitis) and the degree of the loss of bone support (periodontitis), the greater the periodontal sac the greater the bone loss and depth of the dental plaque or subgingival calculus to be eliminated.
Curettage and scaling
For class I (1-3mm) periodontal sacs, better results are obtained from conservative periodontal treatment (curettages, radicular scraping and smoothing).
For Class II (4-6 mm) periodontal sacs, favourable results are also obtained with conservative treatment.
For Class III (> 6 mm) periodontal sacs, the most favourable results are obtained from surgical treatment, although many studies show that in the long term results are achieved which are similar to those achieved with conservative treatment.
Maintenance of the gums
Once periodontal treatment has been carried out and the dental plaque or supra and subgingivial calculus has been eliminated, it is important to be aware of the need to maintain the gums in good health.
For this reason we recommend to our patients that they come to see the periodontist at our dental clinics in Barcelona every 6 months for a periodontal revision and gum maintenance.
Periodontal surgery
The principal clinical advantage of surgical treatment is the visual access and control it gives the periodontist in the removal of the subgingival plaque.
If we are able to access all areas with the curettage the non-surgical treatment is, from our point of view, the best therapeutic option in conjunction with periodic periodontal maintenance.
Full-mouth disinfection
The objective of this treatment option for periodontitis is the complete and simultaneous elimination of all the bacteria in the periodontal sacs within less than 24 hours. In this treatment we use buccal antiseptics (clorhexidine).
The basis of the periodontitis treatment with the full-mouth disinfection technique is to eliminate or reduce the pathogenic bacteria from the buccal habitats which can provoke the reinfection of the places already treated.
Same-day-full-mouth desinfection, is a periodontal disease treatment technique that is carried out in our dental clinics in one sole session.
After the diagnostic periodontal probe, in the same session we carry out the radicular scraping and smoothing of the periodontal sac in the whole mouth combined with the administration of clorhexidine.
This periodontitis treatment technique presents the same therapeutic results as the radicular scraping and smoothing technique over different sessions with the only advantage being the possibility of carrying out the full periodontal treatment in one sole appointment.
Currently there are scientific studies which show that this technique presents better therapeutic techniques when compared with the conventional treatment for periodontitis. However, both treatment modes are effective and the choice will be down to the dentist or periodontist.
Full-mouth disinfection technique
In the treatment for periodontitis, the full mouth disinfection technique at Propdental consists of the following steps:
Periodontal probe and diagnosis.
Hygiene instruction.
Removal of supra and subgingival plaque with ultrasound.
Radicular scraping and smoothing with Gracey curettes.
Radicular scaling with perioset.
Brushing of the back of the tongue for 60 seconds with 0,12% clorhexidine gel.
Mouthwashes with 0,12% clorhexidine.
Subgingival irrigation of periodontal pockets above 5mm with clorhexidine gel.
